Booktastic Fun at the 2013 Manila International Book Fair

This is a late post (and you'll probably end up reading this much later than today, since my blog is new and all), but I had lots of fun at the 2013 Manila International Book Fair (MIBF) in SMX. I came home with almost a dozen books, mostly bought from the Fully Booked and National Book Store booths. Welcome to the MIBF!  The NBS booth was right across the entrance...and it's huge. The FB booth was more subdued, with a maze of books. It was like going on a treasure hunt. My book loot from the 2013 MIFB consists of the following (refer to photo from top to bottom): Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn  The story seems interesting, and I thing there's a movie of it showing soon. Foundation by Isaac Asimov I'm trying to get into sci-fi novels and Asimov is one of the greats. I recently read Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game and thought it was great.  Peace and War by Joe Haldeman I was a bit wary of this sci-fi tri

Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card – Book Review

Author: Orson Scott Card Title: Ender’s Game Place Published: New York Publisher: Tor Science Fiction Year Published: 1991 No. of Pages: 324 Price: Php315 Place Bought: Fully Booked Rockwell Ender’s Game, as far as I can remember, is the first science fiction (sci-fi) book I’ve ever finished reading. It only took me half a day to read Orson Scott Card’s book, and I'm glad that many first-time sci-fi readers found it just as accessible. More than being an easy read this novel also won the prestigious Hugo Award (1985) and Nebula Award (1986), both annually given to outstanding literature. Synopsis The earth is recovering from a second alien attack. In response, world governments unify. They begin training military geniuses in the art of war at a very young age. Six-year-old Andrew “Ender” Wiggin is one of the trainees recruited and transported to Battle School in outer space. There is only one ‘game’ in Battle School: non-lethal anti-gravity battles between two te

Her debut novel Special Topics in Calamity Physics won the Center for Fiction’s Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize (known then as the John Sargent Sr. First Novel Prize). The New York Times Book Review also named it one of the 10 Best Books of 2006. Expectations were building for Pessl, and she would ultimately deliver, proving she was more than just a one-hit wonder.
