Rating System

Rating System:

On the Filipino book blog Overbooked Reader, I rate my reads on a scale of 1 books (lowest) to 5 books (highest). My ratings reflect my opinions on the books I am reviewing, at a certain point in time. I reserve the right to edit my reviews or change my ratings, at any time my opinions change.

General Rating:

5 Books

I give a rating of 5 to my favorite reads. As a book evangelist, I recommend the books and authors I love the most to anyone willing to listen. I go as far as giving them copies of these books, so they’ll be highly encouraged (read: compelled) to read them.

For example, I gave one of my friends a copy of Looking for Alaska by John Green, in an attempt to convert her into a Nerdfighter. It worked! And she’s now a more avid Nerdfighter than I am. Her favorite John Green book is The Fault in Our Stars.

In high school, I recommended the Chronicles of the Raven, a fantasy book series by James Barclay, to a friend of mine, and he absolutely loved it. In 2014, he suggested I read The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie, and I loved that series too.

After reading my review of Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card (or after I commented on her blog post about the Ender’s Game movie), a friend and fellow book blogger recommended I read Ender’s Shadow, and I ended up liking that book even more than Ender's Game.

4 Books

I give a rating of 4 to books I thoroughly enjoyed reading, but lack a certain x-factor that would have made them stellar reads. These are books I would enjoy reading again. If they belongs to a series, I would look forward to reading their sequels and prequels as well.

3 Books

Books that get a 3 rating are good, but not great. I enjoyed reading them overall, but I probably won't feel an urge to read them again. I don’t regret buying, borrowing, or reading these books, but I may not buy other books in the series or written by the same author, unless something extraordinary happens (e.g. the author releases something totally different).

2 Books

Books that get a 2 rating, I didn’t enjoy reading. There is definitely a sense of disappointment and regret at my having spent time and/or money on these books. However, they may not necessarily be horrible reads. It may be that they are just not my cup of tea. Others may try reading these books, but they may do so at their own risk.

1 Book

If ever I give books a rating of 1, it will be because I hated them so much I wanted to tear them to shreds and throw the remaining confetti in a furnace. I warn people against reading these books, which can only leave them with feelings of bottomless disappointment, dismay, and fury.
